Welcome to The South Staffroom
I thought that we could use this blog called The South Staffroom as a place to discuss and reflect upon current practice and great books we are reading, share quotes we find, articles of interest. A place to gather with a cup of tea or glass of wine and chat with old friends and new.
Current books I am reading and would love to discuss are:
The Innovator's Mindset by George Couros
and
Teaching Math with Meaning by Cathy Marks Kerpan (spelling?)

Great! I don’t have either of those. Carlene was asking me about the first resource. Do you have your own copy? Maybe we can ask admin to buy us this rsource? I can ask..
ReplyDeleteI d o own my own copy. I just finished it over this holiday break. Read it with a pen in hand (much to horrific dismay of my 14 year old book loving son), making notes in margins, highlights, commenting throughout. Inspiring and reaffirming. I loved it! Throughout the book, shared many texts, quotes, screen shots and conversed with others. Hence the blog idea!
ReplyDeleteLove this! I've got both books as well. I actually downloaded Innovator's Mindset into my iBooks and am loving it . With every page I read, the more I realize how lucky I am to be surrounded by such 'innovative' teachers at Eldorado. I know changes are inevitable but you all have been my role models and have pushed me to be a better teacher for my students. Read the book ... it speaks volumes to the way we all want to guide our students. Teaching Math with Meaning just arrived today ... Carlene had tweeted something and it intrigued me.
ReplyDeleteI am also currently reading The Innovator's Mindset, and may just have to order Teaching Math with Meaning. I am loving Innovator's Mindset as well, and can't believe how much it is hitting home as I read it. I am constantly flagging pages and making notes for parts I will need to revisit!
ReplyDeleteJust placed a hold on this book at the professional library. Soon, I will be able to post too!
ReplyDeleteI just searched a preview in iBooks (thanks for letting me know, Christine) and the first quote has me sold! "Once you stop learning, you start dying." ~Einstein
ReplyDeleteSo true! I'll have to get my hands on a copy.
As I read through the first chapter, I couldn’t help but wonder why we didn’t think of writing a book like this. Lol. This is Eldorado to a tee. On page 21 figure 2 What do you want leaders to do with technology? Outline Good answers and Better answers. The first time I saw this was in PQP 2 and it didn’t really make much sense to me when the instructor gave it to discuss. However, it makes perfect sense to me now as a view it in context. I always find it interesting that when something “new” is introduced in the education world that sometimes it is tossed around freely with no true meaning, purpose, or connection. As an educator/administrator I believe it is very important for me to provide the conditions that will allow others to feel comfortable and confident to share their ideas knowing that others will embrace it, challenge it, or tweak it to suit whatever intended purpose!
